Limitations

Steve's comments on the limitations

  1. I agree, though what they do is to some extent reasonable: they do not model the flywheel explicitly, but they do still model the torque that could be exerted by the flywheel (e.g. arms). Their control input $F^\alpha$ is not representing ankle torque, but the arm torque, simply transferred down to the pivot joint. This is correct, and a much simpler model that I should also have suggested as a first pass. So, what is lost by not modeling the actual flywheel state?
  2. If you don't model the flywheel, you ignore the state of the flywheel. This is fine, if it is okay to ignore their position/velocity. But it means you cannot impose constraints on the flywheel (arm) maximum position or velocity, which I would argue is actually an important constraint. They actually talk about these points in appendix D (as you mention in point 5.). So one thing we probably want to show is that these constraints are indeed important. I think they are, though I don't know which constraint is the limiting one (or if both are). Identifying that could be interesting.
  3. Not sure that's really a significant limitation: the gravitation force they have on $R$ will be very similar to the spring force that we've modeled. I think at this level of abstraction, neither is super "faithful" to a first-principles view of the system, and to decide which is better you'd have to look at data.

If you have vision, should you rely more on keeping the CoG centered, compared to if don't?), and then validate that prediction with a real-world experiment (e.g. blindfolded).

  9. Aside: to me it seemed that their torque upperbound is rather high, but I don't have any real reasoning behind it. Do you have better thoughts on this?

Their note in the appendix that "the qualitative behavior of the system is insensitive to the exact value for $F_{max}$$ is imho rather misleading, since they only checked for increasing this upper bound. I would guess (as discussed above) that the constraints are actually quite important, but of course if you actually enforce them, not if you relax them more.

Philip's replies

  1. For the case we're studying of a quite short slackline with relatively little energy I agree that the difference between the models is probably quite small. I think my preference for a spring based system is that it seems like a much more scalable model, in that it will hopefully be easier to adapt to longer lines with more stored energy. While walking/watching a line that's roughly 100m (vs 10m, say), you can feel/see the wave dynamics in the line, and the line has enough stored energy to significantly move the slackliner. So to me it seems much more promising to model some elastic element if we hope to someday understand the task more generally.
  2. It is this comment on page 2099, right before the 2.2 Neurobiology section: "Humans use their arms or a pole to maintain balance, this corresponds to a torque Fa on the inverted pendulum. Moreover, as the angle of the cart is not controlled, we have Ff === 0. We have ignored the role of dissipation and damping in our model given its equivalence to the action of the torque Fa." I don't fully understand the relation to torque here unless they're saying that the slackliner is providing all of the damping in the system. If that's the case, on a smaller line like we've been looking at, I think that's not a bad approximation, but longer lines will have more damping.
  3. I think a blindfold test would be very interesting. I think we know that the visual system is playing a major role in real life slacklining, for example begginer advice often focuses on where you look, or just the fact that blindfolded slacklining is thought to be significantly harder. But experts are able to slackline quite well blindfolded, which seems to indicate the vestibular system is sufficient for balancing on the line. I think this could be a really fruitful path forward if we wanted to look more into the skill/expertise side of things.
  4. I'm specifically referring here to sections 5.1 and 5.2. I mostly think there's a lot more variability in the slackline to tightrope spectrum that's hard to capture with just R and m. Maybe I don't have strong enough intuitions for the parameters yet.
  5. The torque upperbound is hard to get an intuition for, but I bet we could get some estimate from the data. I don't find the derivation from a pole to be very convincing.
